about the art
For this month’s art, three artists explore a topic that has fascinated artists for centuries: light. We present Julie Herndon and Cristina Lord’s sound films paired with mail art by Esther Ruiz.
In this sound film double feature, Julie Herndon’s A Long Postlude presents a chorus of lightbulbs that “sing” texts from Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the photophone and Mormon prophecies about light. Next, Cristina Lord’s Possessed by Light visually scores her voice and electronics composition with footage that is processed to deconstruct light’s unseen elemental qualities.
Ester Ruiz’s mail art is from her “Wells” series inspired by science fiction, black holes, and portals. The amorphous plexiglass shapes are rimmed in otherworldly light that warp any reflections and project alternative views of the surrounding environment.
