Film & Mail Art
by Woo Haran
about the art
This month features a portrait of multi-disciplinary artist Woo Haran, who created both the film and mail art. Collectively, the pieces give us a glimpse into Woo’s [O8kk] — a universe and conceptual space where the moon, water, and water-related objects are central elements, each contributing to a larger, evolving narrative.
The film consists of two works that examine the nature of water, 윤슬 (Ever-Changing) and Na Ra Ga Da (a romanization of the Korean word 날아가다 for “fly”). The minimalist visuals juxtapose rippling water, steam, music notations, poetry fragments, and digital icons to create a shimmering collage that draws the viewer's attention to gradually changing textures in the film’s subtle music.
The mail art shows us two other objects central to [O8kk]: the moon and the mysterious “aeng” that are often found by water. The objects give us a more immersive experience into the world Woo is building. Rooted in the natural world, the artifacts of [O8kk] aim to reflect Woo’s close relationship with nature as a refuge during times of confusion.
