about the art
This month’s art pairs a sound film featuring the “hydro-clarinet” by instrument designer and composer John Eagle, with mail art from designer and architect Katerina Kamprani’s “The Uncomfortable” collection.
The hydro-clarinet is an instrument made of a fish tank water pump with plumbing parts and dozens of feet of PVC and vinyl tubing designed by John Eagle. In this month’s sound film, transient flow, performer (operator) Ford Fourqueran manages the water flow within the instrument to prevent flooding and water loss. Ford’s actions both solve imbalances and create new ones so that his relationship within the system is a kind of maintenance—actions within a system and their consequences.
This month’s mail art is the Slipper Spoon from Katerina Kamprani’s “The Uncomfortable” collection. In this collection, Katerina deconstructs the invisible design language of simple everyday objects then sabotages one of their fundamental properties. They become uncomfortable objects that can still be used, but using them is annoying, awkward, surreal, and funny.
