about the art

It’s a Summer Remix! This July we’re remixing past MFYI releases to feature artists who explore the intimacy of handmade, fragile, musical objects.

The video this month features instrument maker and Thing Music creator Erin Demastes performing Leviathan by composer Tim Feeney. Erin adapts the original percussion quartet score for a group of tiny instrumental automatons including toy record players, an electric soup stirrer, a jewelry display stand, and other small, everyday objects. The automatons work independently at repetitive tasks while Erin gently guides them and shapes their song with her own found sounds.

Multidisciplinary artist María Alejandra Bulla creates small objects such as mirror boxes, hand sewn booklets, nesting cloth envelopes, or a cardboard music box—objects designed to be handled and explored. María’s mail art is an interactive postcard that can be folded into a tiny box sculpture. With delicate embroidery, María’s piece remarks, “some music we make with our hands”
