about the art
A Rube Goldberg machine but make it music. FluxConcert weaves together a collection of Fluxus compositions interpreted specifically for film paired with mail art made from the film’s raw materials.
Capturing actions such as lighting a match, sorting laundry, painting, and folding a paper glider, this film highlights striking sounds and viewpoints of everyday objects and activities. The pieces flow, bump into, and trigger one another to make a film that feels both like a fun puzzle and a strange journey. Scores are composed by Ben Vautier, Yoko Ono, George Maciunas, Mieko Shiomi, Mieko Shiomi, Larry Miller, Eric Andersen, Milan Knížák, and Takehisa Kosugi with performances by Jen Wang, Cassia Streb, Richard An, Daniel Corral, and Carolyn Chen.
In the spirit of ephemerality and use of the everyday — mainstays of the Fluxus movement — the mail art is made from the coveralls from Daniel Corral’s performance of Figure/Ground by Larry Miller. The coveralls no longer exist. They have been cut up to create a limited edition of postcards that each include a unique, tiny, 1-inch, grass stain painting. Because they’re made of organic material, eventually the grass stains will fade and morph. One day, maybe they too will no longer exist.
