about the art
This month we’re bringing you inside an historic Craftsman home in Pasadena, California: the Gamble House—a home designed by brothers Charles and Henry Greene with awe-inspiring attention to detail and construction. The maverick architectural firm created the residence as a home for the Gamble family, and in this video we will be experiencing it as a home for string quartets composed by three American mavericks in their own rights—Johanna Beyer, Charles Ives, and Pamela Z. Through the music’s sound and the Gamble House's space, we can reflect on two deeply formative and contested American ideals: innovation and home.
Our postcard artist is painter and ceramicist Nick McPhail. Nick works with oil paints to layer colour, light, and empty space in a way that captures new perspectives of the Los Angeles vista. His piece for this pairing uses the Gamble House as a starting point to explore the sensation of peering through one space into another. Together, the video and the visual art examine the innovative spirit that drives a true craftsperson to shape and reimagine their surroundings.
