about the art
Performer-composer Sarah Belle Reid brings us into her sound world with an imagined prelude to an unfinished opera by composer Johanna Beyer. Using her trumpet and synthesizers to create an orchestra of electronic sounds, Sarah improvises and then performs the notated music to Johanna’s Music of the Spheres. Composed in 1938, Music of the Spheres is one of the only surviving fragments of Johanna’s opera and is the first known work scored for electronic instruments by a female composer.
Our postcard artist this month is Phillip David Stearns who started out experimenting with sound through circuit bending and analog electronics before pivoting to his current work as a visual artist and designer. His practice involves the use of a wide range of electronic technologies and media to explore the roles technology plays in contemporary society.
